My Mission
My observations and opinions about IT are based on 40 years of use in science and technology and lately, in education. I like IT that is fast, cost-effective and reliable. My first use of GNU/Linux in 2001 was so remarkably better than what I had been using, I feel it is important work to share GNU/Linux with the world. Now that I'm retired I still use GNU/Linux on every computer in my home except the smartphones which run Android/Linux.Lately, I've been giving lots of thought to the world I inherited and which I will leave to my descendants. I'm planting grass, trees, flowers and vegetables in my large lot and I've ordered a Solo EV. I plan to charge my Solo by means of a tracking solar array. Life is good if you have a purpose. I do.

Tree-Hugger Me
I used to make fun of “tree-huggers” but now I am one: I voted Green, I’ve planted hundreds of trees, some of which are still alive, and I’ve bid on an electric car. Today, TLW (The Little Woman) snapped this … Continue reading

Electrification Continues
Back in the 1940s, electrification was just coming to rural Manitoba, where I lived as a boy. Today, electrification has a different meaning, public charging stations for EVs. My favourite EV, the Solo, has only 161 km nominal range so … Continue reading

The High Price Of Colour…
I have long bemoaned the lack of choice of colour in the Solo EV. It comes in various shades of grey from black to silver and RED. That’s just silly. I chose RED but TLW would almost certainly choose any … Continue reading
Going Green
“In order to quickly return atmospheric greenhouse gases to safe levels and avoid triggering positive feedback loops, not only do we need to stop burning fossil carbon, we need to implement carbon sequestration strategies. In other words, we need to … Continue reading
The Gentrification Of A Cup Of Coffee
Here I am, awakened during a dream in the wee hours. I dreamt my late father came into the kitchen and solemnly informed my mother that a cup of coffee was a multiple of his hourly pay and he would … Continue reading

The Battery
I love batteries. They give us backup of electricity, storage, portability, all good things. Last week one gave me a severe headache. It was the battery for the Ariens mower/garden tractor. Last month it was weak and I charged it … Continue reading

Conservative? Conserving What?
The Brussels Times – Electric vehicles emit more CO2 than diesel ones, German study shows. https://t.co/wdWtFApf8E — Lisa Raitt (@lraitt) 24 April 2019 It’s hard to believe the leadership of the so-called conservative party of Canada would push the idea … Continue reading
