My Mission
My observations and opinions about IT are based on 40 years of use in science and technology and lately, in education. I like IT that is fast, cost-effective and reliable. My first use of GNU/Linux in 2001 was so remarkably better than what I had been using, I feel it is important work to share GNU/Linux with the world. Now that I'm retired I still use GNU/Linux on every computer in my home except the smartphones which run Android/Linux.Lately, I've been giving lots of thought to the world I inherited and which I will leave to my descendants. I'm planting grass, trees, flowers and vegetables in my large lot and I've ordered a Solo EV. I plan to charge my Solo by means of a tracking solar array. Life is good if you have a purpose. I do.

Dust In The Wind Of IT
2013 was a remarkable year. Clearly Wintel is dying or at least being cut down to size. IC Insights reports “Total worldwide production value of electronic systems is projected to increase 4% in 2013 to $1.41 trillion and climb to … Continue reading

IT and Bridges
It’s hard to avoid the “Bridge Scandal” roaring on CNN lately: For 25 years, a toll-bridge connecting NJ to NYC had the rightmost 3 of 12 lanes of the upper level devoted to merging traffic from Fort Lee, the nearest … Continue reading

Opening The Valve To High-volume GNU/Linux PC-Production On A Global Scale
OK, gaming’s a niche in IT, a place where teenagers and young men work out their frustrations with the real world… but it has long been one of the few places GNU/Linux has not thrived: gaming, business, and retail shelves. … Continue reading

ARM v Intel – David v Goliath – Facebook’s Compiling PHP For ARM…
“The smoking gun for this dramatic shift was a post by Facebook on the Hip Hop Virtual Machine blog on Thursday that indicated the team is implementing ARM processor support in its translation engine, which turns Facebook’s PHP code into … Continue reading
Woe For Wintel
The one valid argument Wintel has is that desktops/notebooks with “Intel Inside” and that other OS can do bigger tasks, as if most consumers actually had stuff to do… Check out these specs:“Galaxy J runs Android 4.3 and features a … Continue reading

FLOSS Inspires Diversification In Hardware For Small Cheap Computers
Never has IT been more diverse. All kinds of units are shipping today with single, dual, quad and penta 32bit cores, but soon 64bit cores will be everywhere and there will be a few octal cored chips. It took Intel … Continue reading

Intel Underneath
Intel, one part of the Wintel team, has been checking out its options for nearly a decade. Faced with the decline of shipments of Wintel PCs, Intel either has to shrink or diversify. It’s diversifying: “Intel will open its factories … Continue reading

Intel: If You Can’t Beat ’em, Join ’em
“In what can only be described as highly ironic, Intel is set to make what will easily be one of the first quad-core 64-bit ARM processors. On Tuesday, Altera announced that its Stratix 10 system-on-a-chip (SoC) will incorporate a "high-performance, … Continue reading
PC Shipments to the Philippines Show The Extent Of Wintel’s Malaise
I came across a news item by IDC: PC Shipments to the Philippines in Q2 2013 Suffer Brunt of Peso Devaluation. They go on about how devaluation of the currency impacted shipments of legacy PCs to Philippines. The shocking thing … Continue reading

Wintel Outlook Shrinks
“While the results of the second quarter were in line with forecast, a number of issues led IDC to further downgrade its PC outlook. Aside from stubbornly depressed consumer interest, 2013 also marks the first year where emerging regions are … Continue reading

Pet Peeves Invoked By Wintel In Its Defence
Wintel is fighting back against those who think older legacy PCs are acceptable performers. Intel recently asked IDC to come up with evidence to support the idea that it’s time to replace older PCs. They surveyed US households… Here are … Continue reading
