Trump v Air

“The Trump administration will seek to revoke California’s authority to regulate automobile greenhouse gas emissions — including its mandate for electric-car sales — in a proposed revision of Obama-era standards, according to three people familiar with the plan. The proposal, expected to be released this week, amounts to a frontal assault on one of former President Barack Obama’s signature regulatory programs to curb emissions that contribute to climate change. It also sets up a high-stakes battle over California’s unique ability to combat air pollution and, if finalized, is sure to set off a protracted courtroom battle.”

I’ve not always been a fan of CARB especially when they resulted in my having a rototiller that always ran at full throttle to optimize combustion. I like control. Nowadays, though, I’m all in favour of replacing gas-guzzling automobiles with electric vehicles. It’s the right thing to do. Everyone knows that, even “global warming deniers”. They breathe the air polluted by products of combustion including NOx, the stuff that turns skies brown over cities. I hate the stench, noise and waste heat from those engines. That’s one of the reasons I live outside a city. I love the efficiency of EVs. It’s not only the energy-efficiency that is attractive but the lower cost of maintaining fewer moving parts. That’s why I drive an hybrid now and soon will own an EV.

Trump is wanting to “help” the auto-makers by blocking California and other states from regulating automobiles. Whatever happened to “states’ rights” advocates in the GOP? They fear Trump and Trump’s supporters. Fear of fools is an illness. I hope the November elections will cure it. During the protracted legal battles which this action will spawn auto-makers will have a problem predicting who will win. If they turn back to gas-guzzlers, foreign imports will flood their market. If they keep advancing towards EVs and Trump “wins” they will lose their investments. It’s unfortunate that auto-makers and “energy” companies have bent Trump’s ear. They are likely to lose this war as USA may have a large portion of foolish people but they are still a minority. Anyone who thinks Trump is doing the right thing should suck on a tail-pipe. Normal people hate tail-pipes without that test.

This is an interesting development for the maker of my favourite EV, the Solo. They’ve just begun to set up shop in California after achieving safety certification. CA is a prime market for them having huge concentrations of automobiles and mountains which help trap smog over LA and San Diego.
