My Mission
My observations and opinions about IT are based on 40 years of use in science and technology and lately, in education. I like IT that is fast, cost-effective and reliable. My first use of GNU/Linux in 2001 was so remarkably better than what I had been using, I feel it is important work to share GNU/Linux with the world. Now that I'm retired I still use GNU/Linux on every computer in my home except the smartphones which run Android/Linux.Lately, I've been giving lots of thought to the world I inherited and which I will leave to my descendants. I'm planting grass, trees, flowers and vegetables in my large lot and I've ordered a Solo EV. I plan to charge my Solo by means of a tracking solar array. Life is good if you have a purpose. I do.

Blinded About Sun
“President Trump blows a lot of wind about trying to bring back coal jobs, but if he was paying attention, he would have to admit the growth is in solar jobs. It’s almost as though he is energy blind.” See Solar … Continue reading

After The Rain
We had a cold front move through last night as we slept, bringing numerous thunderstorms. Fortunately, here they were gentle with just a few gusts of wind. The rain was long, light and welcome, just what my potted seedlings needed … Continue reading
Why I’m Glad I Escaped The Wintel Monopoly All Those Years Ago
It’s so tedious that M$ and Intel have monopolized computing, an activity I love and appreciate for its power, efficiency and economy, at least using GNU/Linux. Today I read the following articles and just had to thank Debian GNU/Linux for … Continue reading

Give Trump The Boot
“The practice of separating these families was implemented without any effective system or procedure for (1) tracking the children after they were separated from their parents, (2) enabling communication between the parents and their children after separation, and (3) reuniting … Continue reading
Economics Trumps Trump
“The Mid-Continent Nail plant in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, laid off 60 of its 500 workers last week because of increased steel costs. The company blames the 25% tariff on imported steel. Orders for nails plunged 50% after the company raised … Continue reading

My Goals For Renewable Energy Will Be Achieved Long Before 2050
“falling photovoltaic (PV), wind, and battery costs will cause the dramatic shift in investment, Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) notes. “PV and wind are already cheaper than building new large-scale coal or gas plants,” the 2018 report says. In addition, … Continue reading

Just Following Orders…
“Something just doesn’t sit well with the image of a bureaucrat scoffing at a reporter’s question about whether separating young immigrant children from their parents constitutes a form of child abuse. But Kirstjen Nielsen should know better than to attempt to … Continue reading
Weather For Growing Pumpkins
This is a nearly perfect situation for growing pumpkins: good moisture levels in Earth, light winds, lots of sunshine, high temperatures, and no deer have yet eaten or trampled the plants. Unfortunately, frost, high winds and drought caused me to … Continue reading

Grow Soybeans? Blame Trump
In the past two weeks, the price of soybeans has fallen over 10%. Blame Trump and his stupid misunderstanding of trade imbalances. The Chinese are not stealing jobs. The Chinese aren’t stealing money or anything of value from USA by … Continue reading

ARMed Attack On Super-Computing
“The HPC system is comprised of 5,184 ARM-based processors — the Thunder X2 processor, built by Cavium. Each processor has 28 cores and runs at 2 GHz. Astra will deliver over 2.3 theoretical peak petaflops of performance, which should put … Continue reading

Impeach Trump And Vote Out Republicans For Child Abuse/Crimes Against Humanity
“Two-thirds of Americans disapprove of the Trump administration’s practice of taking undocumented immigrant children from their families and putting them in government facilities on US borders, according to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS. Only 28% approve. But among Republicans, there … Continue reading
Driving An EV … In China
Here’s a guy who tells the story why he bought an electric vehicle in China and how it works for him. He was a reluctant buyer but government regulations made it an offence to drive a car without local registration … Continue reading
