Change is inevitable and desirable. Things often improve with change, like TLW’s desktop client. Today, I replaced the monstrous old but small client with a fast new Odroid-C2. There were a couple of strange glitches:
- I could not get it to work with her old monitor even with a shiny new HDMI to VGA adaptor…, and
- with her small TV beside her desk, 720p would not work but 1080p was just fine…
So, change happens sometimes with strange effects. She hasn’t tried it out yet but I expect she will adapt quickly to a couple of small changes like being able to use a wireless keyboard on her lap and a wireless mouse in her left hand on the desk. She’s a southpaw so that may work for her. 😉
I did finally kill off the last theme-related problem. I installed gtk-theme-config. It’s sad to think such a tool is needed to fix black on black as a default configuration… but it worked very well instantly. I picked light coloured backgrounds for default, panel and menu and dark foregrounds, mostly black. Done.
She has access to the old file-system and servers, most of the usual applications and it’s much faster, being on a gigabit/s link. This month, I will order a bunch of 1TB drives to create a new file-system for the next decade. Now, we just need a few more of these Odroid-C2s and a new ARMed server to be doing the 21st century in style.
