The Finns have long used a high percentage of GNU/Linux desktops like many European countries.See Top 7 Desktop OSs in Finland from 1 Mar to 6 May 2015 That all changed last month when StatCounter began to record huge spikes in share of page-views one or two days each week. This strange pattern continues. It’s a huge change. Average share of page-views for GNU/Linux in March was 2.73% but in April it changed to 5.43% while the non-spiked days remained nearly constant at around 2.7%. The average share of page-views for the last 30 days was 5.93%. The highest day in April was April 24 at 15.73%. All the spikes occurred weekdays.

My Mission
My observations and opinions about IT are based on 40 years of use in science and technology and lately, in education. I like IT that is fast, cost-effective and reliable. My first use of GNU/Linux in 2001 was so remarkably better than what I had been using, I feel it is important work to share GNU/Linux with the world. Now that I'm retired I still use GNU/Linux on every computer in my home except the smartphones which run Android/Linux.Lately, I've been giving lots of thought to the world I inherited and which I will leave to my descendants. I'm planting grass, trees, flowers and vegetables in my large lot and I've ordered a Solo EV. I plan to charge my Solo by means of a tracking solar array. Life is good if you have a purpose. I do.

Similar spikes in http://gs.statcounter.com/#desktop-browser_version-FI-daily-20150101-20150509 too. Looks like an anomaly to me, and indeed they do not say about tracking unique users only. I wonder what happened to totals of hits during those times.

That would be consistent with my theory that it’s the schools if the schools don’t use much MacOS. It’s possible that schools are “dual-booting” TOOS and GNU/Linux but I’ve rarely seen that.
Digging deeper, I found that Chrome Browser shows upticks when FireFox and IE are down together, so perhaps it’s a rollout of ChromeBooks. Perhaps there’s a different UserAgent string so StatCounter sees GNU/Linux and not ChromeOS. Still, it’s strange to see this behaviour only in Finland. Google Trends describes Chromebooks as breaking out in Finland.
Perhaps M$ got the message. They just closed their last store in Finland…
What ever is going on here its interesting that OS X is not being effected.
Yes you see windows 8.1 interacting with Windows 7 then Linux interacting with both. Exactly what is going on who knows. Interesting things also include the fact Linux is running above Windows 8 and Windows XP values as well in Finland.
Sorry, but it went back down http://gs.statcounter.com/#desktop-os-FI-daily-20150301-20150508
In reply to no one in particular, YES! I finally finished the assembly of the rototiller and tractor. Without all the right tools, no parts-list, no assembly-instructions, a couple of wrong parts and missing parts, it must have been close to 100h of slave-labour, but it’s done, just in time for planting. I will do a lubricant check, some practice and production this weekend. Yes, it would have been easier to shop at Sears, but now I have the right size of machine for my property. It should do the job 5 times faster than the late Sears tiller and I get to ride… Barring stupidity, the grand kids will inherit it.
