A Tipping Point or just a Disturbance In The Force That Is GNU/Linux On The Desktop?

Many years ago in a galaxy far away, I remember watching the first Star Wars movie and one of the things I remember is that the gurus could sense a disturbance in the “Force”. Is that what StatCounter is seeing or is it a tipping point where that other OS has lost huge amounts of “mind-share” and diverse groups around the world are no longer cowed by the words of trolls and salesmen who’ve told so many lies:

  • “It’s too hard to learn…”,
  • “It has hardware problems…”,
  • “It lacks applications…”, or the sinister,
  • “We have patents on it…”

I’ve been saying we were at a tipping point for many years. Perhaps the world no longer hides GNU/Linux or StatCounter has better figured out how to identify GNU/Linux. Whatever, it’s a brave new world of web-stats. BTW, the graph above does not count ChromeOS as GNU/Linux, just because I’m lazy. ChromeOS isn’t recorded in several countries but where it’s sold, it’s getting ~0.23 % of page-views. StatCounter’s peak for GNU/Linux desktop page-views globally was on May 24 at 1.71% and ChromeOS was at 0.18%.
