UK Invaded By */Linux

With many millions of Android/Linux tablets being shipped to UK, you would think StatCounter would be blown away but it seems to count only a fraction of the devices. There is a good correlation between the rate of change of StatCounter’s page-views and IDC’s tablet-shipments. Whatever, 2.6 million tablets shipped to UK in Q3 and 1.7million were non-Apple. Meanwhile 2 million non-Apple legacy PCs shipped… The non-Wintel tablets will show up in webstats sooner or later. Again, I think the webstats are severely flawed but they do show changes. I like this change, ever-increasing use of FLOSS.

It was a great ride but the end is near for Wintel PCs, costing too much to buy and to operate and being difficult to carry around. FLOSS, Moore’s Law and ARM finally skirted all the burden Wintel laid on IT. It looks like the empire will shrink to something like desktop PCs only used in business, perhaps 20% of shipments of all PCs. The rest of us can be free to use our IT to its full potential unhindered by useless clauses in M$’s EULA.

There are many explanations for StatCounter’s and others’ stats. I have seen machines running that other OS that were extremely sluggish and the chief symptoms were that Internet access was slow and the NIC was working hard… If they were spamming some sites on StatCounter’s list, they would be overcounting that other OS. I have never seen malware on a GNU/Linux system although I have worked with hundreds of them.

Obviously StatCounter counts great deal of just Windows-botnet machines. Nobody has denied that Windows is leading OS of botnet machines.
