Russia Continues Move To */Linux On Mobile Devices

“According to the most recent quarterly data published by International Data Corporation (IDC), PC shipments in Russia in the second quarter of 2013 continued their steep decline, with volume slipping by 37.3% year on year to a total of 2.47 million units. The notebook market suffered a contraction of 45.3% year on year to 1.69 million units shipped, while the desktop market had a less pronounced fall, down 8.2% to 785,000 units.

“The tablet market in Russia grew by 156% year on year, reaching a volume of 1.95 million units shipped in Q2 2013. "This growth mainly stemmed from the home segment, fuelled by the availability of a large variety of low-cost tablets," explains Vinogradova. "Android tablets will post a significant increase in market share in 2013, thanks to the increasing number of tablets using Android OS priced at $100 and less."”

via Russia PC Shipments Continue to Slow in Q2 2013 as Tablets and Smartphones Gain Share, according to IDC.

This is about the steepest decline in Wintel shipments anywhere in the world, 4.5 percentage points per annum. Combined with an impressive growth in Android/Linux tablets one can see a dramatic shift in installed base of operating systems in a very short time. IDC predicts tablets will surpass notebooks soon in shipments and M$ is declining with the notebook and desktop PC. What Putin decreed is happening much faster than I imagined was possible. The consumer space is getting ahead of the governmental space.
