Tor is something I am investigating as part of my withdrawal from the cloud. Ironically, it is a sort of cloud in itself, providing global proxies for navigating the web based on cooperating clients. Ironically, again, it was initiated for the US military…

Tor Project: Overview.

I am still new to Tor but essentially it supplies a derivative of FireFox integrated with a system of proxies. For ordinary browsing so far it seems transparent and not sluggish. By default it doesn’t do Flash and one of my favourite sites blocks Tor… Popularity of Tor apparently took off about 2013-August-19, about the time that Groklaw froze up.Tor_direct-users-2013-07-29-off-2013-08-30-all

What to do indeed? Is Tor sufficient or even useful to combat intrusive practices on the web? Is it sufficiently scalable? Will one, a hundred or a thousand million users make a difference? Stay tuned.
