Hosting Providers And Their OS

Netcraft has provided it’s latest Hosting Providers sites ordered by failures.

That other OS is going down the drain. They are not in the top 10. They don’t show up until 13th spot. The next is 26th. I did a little maths and found the average ranking of the different OS (higher number is worse performance)…

  • GNU/Linux 22
  • FreeBSD 14
  • That Other OS 28

That other OS has the worst average ranking and the lowest share of providers.

The message is clear. People who care about price/performance choose GNU/Linux or FreeBSD. For consumer-devices such as personal computers, GNU/Linux will work for you. Surprise! GNU/Linux will cost you $0, a download, and a few minutes of time to install it. The same characteristics that hosting providers like on a server will be yours on a desktop/notebook PC, too. I recommend Debian GNU/Linux.
