Intel Classmate PC Approaching 1% of Global PCs

Intel has shipped millions of Classmate PCs and variants. Many of these use GNU/Linux. These, alone, could account for a larger share of PC usage than NetApplications reports. For example, GNU/Linux is very popular in Latin America where 4 million Classmates have sold, yet NetApplications shows ~1% GNU/Linux there. Needless to say many other OEMs have sold GNU/Linux PCs in South America.

Not at all, Mr. Pogson. I had never seen one until you started flogging them around here. I don’t really care, if the truth be known, what happens to desktop Linux at all. My interest in Linux is solely with servers and even that interest has become merely academic.

I was faced with the prospect of working on the marketing aspects of selling our server support products that are available for UNIX and Windows servers in the Linux arena. Management originally considered the environment to be closer to Windows, on economic (cost) terms, than to UNIX. Subsequently, it has come to be that the Linux server world is seen to be much more akin to the UNIX server world as server operators share UNIX and Linux environments much more than Windows and Linux ones. So, I am off the hook, so to speak, and am only peripherally involved these days.

Why does Clarence Moon believe that GNU/Linux has a ~1% share of the desktops? I thought he read NetApplications reports all day long.

They have shipped them with Windows 7, Mr. Pogson. Why do you think they are all Linux? Also, why do you have this mania about Net Applications? It records activity on commercial sites and the kiddies playing around with one of these toy computers, whether Windows or Linux, is not likely to register on that scale.
