I am an old man and have lived many winters in Canada. This is the mildest winter of my life probably. Is it global warming? Is it Nature playing tricks on us? Are we due for a shock?
Our normals are 15C colder and where are the howling winds? We had a bit of a blow a couple of days ago but there’s hardly any snow on the ground. It’s just not right… We’ve gone from most winters being horribly cold and snowy affairs to just a slowdown in growth of plants.
That was mild weather by our standards. This is ridiculous. It’s nearly five standard deviations above normal temperatures.
Of course, a single weather system can pump warm air anywhere but we’ve had mild weather for months. I guess I will go out for another walk wearing little more than a jacket and summer boots. One good thing about this kind of winter, nearly all the deer should survive and hunting quotas will increase…
UPDATE I did go for that walk wearing nothing but boots and a long-sleeved shirt and jeans. I even took off the gloves because it was so warm. I was sweating after walking only 2.5 miles. I saw fresh deer tracks. I never usually see that in our winter as the deer use more energy than they can obtain from browsing in the cold wind and deep snow. Usually they are starving by springtime.
Here’s another report on the whacky weather.
Snow is melting here and it’s before noon…
