Last night as I was getting ready for bed, I observed that Environment Canada was predicting frost and according to the data logs a killing frost (-2oC) was likely in my opinion. EC was predicting -1oC. I put a sprinkler on and let it run all night. When I woke this is what the logs showed:
“26 May 2011
time | condition | temp. C |
---|---|---|
7:00 | Mainly Sunny | 1 |
6:00 | Mainly Sunny | -3 |
5:00 | Clear | -3 |
4:00 | Clear | -2 |
3:00 | Clear | 0 |
2:00 | Clear | 1 |
“
I found ice on the plants at the edge of the sprinkled zone but inside, everyone was happy. I may have pumpkins and spinach and caragana this year. Sometimes it pays to second-guess EC. They predicted -1 and the temperature reached -3. -2 is lethal to tender plants.
