Black ICE

“Germany must eventually follow other European countries in banning new diesel cars, Chancellor Angela Merkel said, conceding for the first time that diesel’s days are numbered in the wake of the emissions scandals.”

It’s the right thing to do, banning diesel engines, gasoline engines too. Sure they are convenient in mobile devices but electric vehicles are more convenient, easier to maintain, far more efficient and much less polluting. Electric vehicles are feasible. Besides banning internal combustion engines, governments should be promoting electric vehicles. It’s the right thing to do.

Rapidly heating a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen at a high pressure is a certain way of manufacturing NOx. Hot oil vapourizes. Combustion is not 100% too. You get a variety of carbon compounds out the exhaust including CO and CO2. That pollution is so unnecessary for all but the long haul truckers these days. Tesla and others even have solutions for that but they are not as mature as compact electric vehicles which will drive ~100miles/161km on a charge done at home.

Efficiency alone is sufficient reason to drive electrically. The Solo EV, for instance will drive 161km on 17kWh of electricity. Those internal combustion cars use ten times as much energy to drive the same distance. Even a bloated five-seater uses a fifth as much energy as an ICE. Then, there’s global warming. While a bit of CO2 may seem innocuous or even useful for plants, it’s too much too fast. All the plants in the world can’t keep up with what we’re producing. The concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is rising rapidly and adding a mirror-blanket in the atmosphere raising the average temperature of our weather, rapidly changing weather-patterns and raising sea-level as ice melts. That’s bad, dangerous and so unnecessary.

Ban ICE. Promote EVs. Do the right thing.
