“Lawyers for Chevron say they will not contest that climate change is real. Instead, they say they will accept the findings set forth in the Fifth Assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. “Chevron’s neither going to overstate nor understate degrees of confidence. Chevron’s simply going to present the conclusions of the IPCC because Chevron thinks that’s the best and the most accurate way of responding to the court’s tutorial request””
See In Federal Lawsuit, Judge Asks 8 Questions, Chevron Admits Climate Change Is RealThere are some strange things done in California and this is no different. A famous judge (one who has ruled on several high profile cases involving FLOSS) is asking for clarification of some issues in a trial of petroleum companies by municipalities over global warming. I guess the issue is the responsibility of Big Oil for damage to the climate. Certainly CA has seen some huge issues with weather/fires and maybe even earthquakes but it’s hard to see a court blaming Big Oil outright. Big Oil didn’t build the automobiles. Big Oil didn’t burn the damned black goo. They just pumped it out of the Earth.
Some of the findings quoted from those reports are:
“Human influence on the climate system is clear, and recent anthropogenic emissions of green-house gases are the highest in history. Recent climate changes have had widespread impacts on human and natural systems.
Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, and sea level has risen.”
Still, it’s an interesting case where an oil company does agree that global warming is happening. That’s more understanding/reason than we see from the White House.
