Global Warming On Trial

“Lawyers for Chevron say they will not contest that climate change is real. Instead, they say they will accept the findings set forth in the Fifth Assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. “Chevron’s neither going to overstate nor understate degrees of confidence. Chevron’s simply going to present the conclusions of the IPCC because Chevron thinks that’s the best and the most accurate way of responding to the court’s tutorial request””

There are some strange things done in California and this is no different. A famous judge (one who has ruled on several high profile cases involving FLOSS) is asking for clarification of some issues in a trial of petroleum companies by municipalities over global warming. I guess the issue is the responsibility of Big Oil for damage to the climate. Certainly CA has seen some huge issues with weather/fires and maybe even earthquakes but it’s hard to see a court blaming Big Oil outright. Big Oil didn’t build the automobiles. Big Oil didn’t burn the damned black goo. They just pumped it out of the Earth.

Some of the findings quoted from those reports are:
“Human influence on the climate system is clear, and recent anthropogenic emissions of green-house gases are the highest in history. Recent climate changes have had widespread impacts on human and natural systems.

Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, and sea level has risen.”

Still, it’s an interesting case where an oil company does agree that global warming is happening. That’s more understanding/reason than we see from the White House.

About Robert Pogson

I am a retired teacher in Canada. I taught in the subject areas where I have worked for almost forty years: maths, physics, chemistry and computers. I love hunting, fishing, picking berries and mushrooms, too.

The big four major petroleum companies knew that global warming was an extremely serious risk back in the 1980’s. After all, for a variety of reasons, they had the best global climate models. I know, I was there.

The Feds have often done wrong. I know that. TFA is from 2015, when a previous prime minister was in charge. I don’t see the point in beating a dead horse. I will not vote for either party next time. Going GREEN. They may not be the best managers of stuff either but at least they don’t want to repeat the failed policies of the past.

  3. Deaf Spy says:

Hey, Robert, instead of constantly whining about Trump, why don’t you look at your own?

LOL, denialist wingnut Windows fanboys again dismiss the scientific consensus as a great conspiracy. Nothing new here.

  5. Grece says:

Robert, using hurricane modeling tracks to convey the ability for Al Gore to accurately predict the weather, over the next decade, is nothing but pure flatulence.

But since we are going down that road, which weather model are you inferring Robert?

The folks that model storms would like speak with you and your wisdom, as the NHC could not accurately predict hurricane Irma by using human or machine methodologies.

  6. Deaf Spy says:

Something as massive as Earth changes slowly and predictably.

    says Robert in answer to:

no human can predict the weather accurately after a few days

What’s up, Robert? Perhaps too much CNN is bad for your logical thinking.

  7. Grece wrote, “Since no human can predict the weather accurately after a few days, how are we suppose to agree with the climate change predictions of late?”

Climate is a summary/average of weather. Variance is much less with climate. Something as massive as Earth changes slowly and predictably. Look at forecasts for hurricanes for instance. They are good for about a week thanks to lots of data over time and space. The same data over decades reveals gross averages for climate.

Actually here is clip of the entire show.

  9. Grece says:

    Dear Robert,

Since no human can predict the weather accurately after a few days, how are we suppose to agree with the climate change predictions of late?

For example, in the 70s, the same scientists were predicting a global ice age, for all humanity forty years ago.

Dumping CO2 into the atmosphere for convenience is foolish and wasteful.

So when are you going to sell your Chinese tractor, the tiller and your Hybrid SUV? It is foolish and wasteful if you don’t eat your own words.

  11. Grece wrote, “Solar variability, along with volcanic activity are the two major players in “climate change.””

Changes we see are not correlated with either. Dumping CO2 into the atmosphere for convenience is foolish and wasteful.

  12. Grece says:

Solar variability, along with volcanic activity are the two major players in “climate change” Robert. Even NASA admits to this; the Solar maximum and minimums are a large driver in Earths climate and can be correlated to 1610 when occlusions were observed in the photosphere of the Sun.

  13. Grece says:

Hmmmmm, lets read that report Robert.

    Climate Change 2014

The first two words state “Climate Change”, your blog entry says “Global Warming”, you are not even using the proper terminology Robert. The left green weenies stopped using the term “global warming” due to be mocked, so instead that went with the term “climate change”, which in it’s own right is disingenuous, as the climate always changes, this is why we have the seasons. Even on the equator, there is seasonal climate changes.

Looking over this report, which is rather aged mind you, we find, Each of the last three decades has been successively warmer at the Earth’s surface than any preceding decade since 1850, to that I call bullshit for one main reason. The dust bowl in the 1930’s!

During that time frame the United States endured the 1936 North American heat wave and the 1936 North American cold wave all in the same year. What was the culprit then Robert?

Running some numbers at ncdc.nooa.gov one will find that the maximum temperature trend from June 1895 – 2017 was +0.09 degrees F/Decade followed with the minimum temperature trend from January 1895 – 2018 was +0.18 degrees F/Decade.

Now knowing that, one can run a simple spreadsheet and see where this is going Robert. The cooling trend is higher then the warming trend.

Now people like you will shout, The Earth Is Getting Colder Because It’s Getting Warmer! which is so illogically silly that Spock would actually cry with laughter.

  14. Grece wrote, “NO such thing is global warming Robert. Do you know how to read?”

Does Grece know how to read? Read the report.

  15. Grece says:

NO such thing is global warming Robert. Do you know how to read? Chevron agreed with the notion of “climate change” NOT global warming. Climate changes all the time, hence the four seasons.

People actually are fighting against this, they don’t want the climate to change, why is that?
