Marvell MACCHIATObin Delayed

“Estimated shipping : end of October (Based on availability from Marvell)”

One of the candidates to replace my AMD64 hair-drying Beast was promised for September but now it’s October…

Shucks! Socketed RAM, SATA connectors, lots of Ethernet… Why can’t these guys deliver something the world needs and wants? This would be the perfect firewall/file-server for my LAN. I’ll have to buy something with not enough RAM and add SATA via USB 3 or something.

Needless to say, It will not be shipped without order.

  3. They still aren’t shipping so there’s not much point in my ordering tech that may never be available and that doesn’t perfectly fit my needs. While waiting, I might as well look for more suitable units coming onto the market. It’s a pretty good unit for networking but not for storage or computing. The seller still doesn’t have stock. I have no idea why.

  4. Pusher says:

    Hello,
    When did you ordered it?

Grece its not 1 integrated network card. Its 4 networks cards. The unique bit is the dual 10G at that low price. Intel motherboard without cpu with dual 10G is normally more expensive than the board Robert is looking at.

Missing FCC approval is a problem. 10G is not that common because it can be radio noisy in the controllers.

  6. Grece says:

You can buy a Intel board with CPU, that has a integrated NIC, as a package deal Robert. Cheaper than your unicorn board.

  7. Grece wrote, “For the lower cost, you could get a quad-core Intel i7”.

Nope. If you consider that the motherboard, CPU and powerful NICs are all included, the ARMed board is price-competitive. Considering the power-consumption it’s no contests. ARM wins.

  8. Grece wrote, “Intel owns >99% of the CPU market”.

That’s plain wrong. ARMed CPUs have been outselling Intel for a decade or more. A lot of “smart” devices, simple controllers and of course mobile computers use ARMed CPUs.

    See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arm_Holdings#Sales_and_market_share

“As of 2014, over 50 billion chips with Arm cores inside have been produced, 10 billion of which were produced in 2013”.

Meanwhile Intel sells ~400 million CPUs per annum.

Well, considering that Intel owns >99% of the CPU market, and ARM is only good for portable devices. Why in the hell would anyone want an ARM board in a server?
The 99% is not true when you taken in servers in china due to what has happened with their home grown arch. Intel still above 97%

The interesting point is still with arm. Arm will complete the task using less power than x86 but x86 will complete particular tasks faster. So the choice between arm and x86 in server a choice between power usage and performance. There are many benchmarks backing this up.

ARM is no competition to Intel, and never will be.

  11. Grece says:

Amazon, Newegg, hell even TigerDirect has options for you Robert. It’s all good!

FY. For the lower cost, you could get a quad-core Intel i7, but NO, Robert would rather wait to the next Ice Age for a unicorn board that will never transpire.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAhahaa.

Deaf Spy really you did not read link before commenting. Go read link you should be able to come up with a good arguement. Wait you are too of a idiot to do response properly so have to Spam garbage.

  13. Deaf Spy says:

Hm, forgot to escape the characters (obviously WordPress can’t be bothered with it).

  14. Deaf Spy says:

This is simple, Robert. Because the world doesn’t need and want it. The World != Robert. Ops, sorry, you’re a Pascal guy. The World Robert.
