War In The South China Sea

“A US oceanographic vessel Thursday had its underwater drone stolen by a Chinese warship literally right in front of the eyes of the American crew, a US defense official told CNN Friday.

In the latest encounter in international waters in the South China Sea region, the USNS Bowditch was sailing about 100 miles off the port at Subic Bay when the incident occurred, according to the official.”

Seizing a vessel on the high seas is an act of war. If China does not promptly return the vessel, USA can take punitive actions including attacking Chinese naval vessels in the area. This could rapidly escalate. China has been claiming most of the South China Sea as their territory. How far will they push this?

Obama has been very restrained in his dealings with China, Russia, Syria, and North Korea, so I don’t expect him to sweep the ocean of the Chinese navy but something other than a diplomatic protest is definitely in order. China is not in a mood to be pacific. Obama’s patience is getting frayed. Trump certainly will be yapping about this and advising reaction. The wheel of chance is spinning. Where it stops is anyone’s guess.

You do realize that hydrogen bombs basically take out whole cities and their suburbs, eh? So, ~80% of the developed world will be wiped out. Basically the world will go back to the stone age or perhaps the iron age, but for a generation or more there will be little or any government power structure. Further, widespread nuclear blasts will change the planet’s climate dramatically. This change could persist for years killing off all kinds of life both plant and animal. You may end up with nothing but grasses and cockroaches surviving. It may not be total destruction but it is a place no thinking person would want to go.

  3. oiaohm says:

So what part of intercontinental thermonuclear war do you guys think is a good thing?
I think more than half of you are stark raving mad!

RAM there is a problem here.
    http://www.wsj.com/articles/four-years-after-fukushima-nuclear-accident-local-farmers-struggle-for-viability-1425930543

The fukushima and other data is showing that particular food crops will be fine to grow after thermonuclear war. One of those crops is rice. Now this kinda causes a problem. China core food crop can be grown on nuclear wasteland.

The common this with the Nuclear threat between countries is MAD being mutual assured destruction so neither side will fire because it will mean destruction. The problem now is data is common out that Nuclear war will not 100 percent promise MAD.

I don’t think nuclear war will be good. Problem comes what happens if the ones in charge find themselves in a location where they will survive perfectly fine because they will not be effected by the nuclear weapons.

  5. dougman wrote, “what happens when the American public starts howling because they can’t get their cheap goods, eh Dougie”.

It’s not just the public, but businesses, like Trump’s, rely heavily on Chinese production of stuff up and down the supply-chain. e.g. steel, welding rods, machinery, chemicals… Trump is threatening his own version of the Soviet “five year plan” all of a sudden… It could bring down the USAian economy, the world economy and threaten war all over. Of course, he may still decide to do nothing but absorb enhanced revenue for his business from his new office. This could be the biggest scam/shakedown operation ever. It’s too bad Trump is so old. He should go to jail for many lifetimes for this crime against humanity. He’s set his family up to be monarchs and half the country is cheering.

An interesting thought. But what happens when the American public starts howling because they can’t get their cheap goods, eh Dougie.

Not sorry that Canada, where I live and breathe, is not under Trump’s thumb. I expect to continue the relationship.

  8. dougman says:

On the notion of China returning the drone. I think this was China’s good bye FU to Obama. As soon as Trump spoke up they backed off and their currency dropped in value right after this happened so this isn’t surprising

Sorry Robert, your Alibaba purchasing days are over.

Dogs only respond to the boot, obviously you never dealt with dogs before.

  10. Wizard Emeritus says:

And the Chinese just returned the drone. Problem solved.

It has nothing to do with Robert Pogsons questioning of of your comment.

In fact one does not need to be a socialist to note the stupidity of the notion that one can just start sinking the ships of a nuclear power to get back a piece of stolen property.

    Modernized by heir Clinton, DERP.

  17. dougman wrote, “Give them 48-hours to return it, or start sinking ships.”

Well, that’s a good recipe to ensure war breaks out. You do realize China has a huge modern military and nukes, eh? How big a war do you want? What’s the value of the drone? A $million? What’s the value of one ship?

Of course, Trump will give them 24h notice on January 20… and he will follow up by nuking Beijing…

  18. dougman says:

Its easy to get this drone back. Give them 48-hours to return it, or start sinking ships.

  19. dougman wrote, “Obama is a wimp.”

No, he’s not. He’s deported millions. He’s authourised the killing of thousands. He’s got the USA largely out of two wars. I think he should have enforced his “red line” and it should have been about bombs as well as chemical weapons, but I don’t think he’s a whimp.
