“Whenever we opened an Office application it would crash. But also, every time someone in the company updated a file in one of the folders we had open – which tended to be the folders that were most active, so saw the most updates – some part of Office (usually Word) would crash. So my colleague Josh, sitting at home working on Word documents, was crashing Office on our systems.Cloud computing. Terrific.”
See My Microsoft Office 365 woes: Constant crashes, malware macros – and settings from HellThe Little Woman, my wife, my long-time companion, my chief market for IT… has determined she needs one machine that can run That Other Operating System. No, it’s not lock-in to M$’s office suite or browser or multimedia applications. It’s her professional organization making life Hell for those not using Mac/Lose operating systems. There’s this thing called a “lock-box” in real estate. They’ve chosen a new system of lock-boxes that requires an access card to be updated/verified daily and that can only be done by a visit to a Mac/Lose PC… #@!$$! Talk about Internet of Things done badly, perhaps the worst possible way.
Yes, I tried getting a dongle card-reader they sold her to run under Wine but even the installer wouldn’t run. What a regression! Not only do the ex-slaves of M$ have to return to slavery they have to pay for it. You can be sure I won’t do any IT-support for her on this gadget. M$ may have improved its product somewhat over the years but folks still operate in fear of malware, updates and they have to pay, pay, pay… for stuff they’ve already bought. She should retire. Perhaps when I get my annuity bumped up to what it should be she’ll be able to do that. Until then another year or two of slavery. When that’s done, there will be a “for sale” on Kijiji or an incident with a sledge hammer or a re-installation with Debian GNU/Linux.
Meanwhile, our $40 Odroid-C2 is looking better all the time. It’s imminent that all the drivers will be mainstreamed into Linux and the few issues with Ubuntu, browsers that don’t load and random glitches will fade into history. There won’t be issues with M$’s cloud here if I have anything to do with it.
