The Nightmare Returns – TLW Requires TOOS

“Whenever we opened an Office application it would crash. But also, every time someone in the company updated a file in one of the folders we had open – which tended to be the folders that were most active, so saw the most updates – some part of Office (usually Word) would crash. So my colleague Josh, sitting at home working on Word documents, was crashing Office on our systems.Cloud computing. Terrific.”

The Little Woman, my wife, my long-time companion, my chief market for IT… has determined she needs one machine that can run That Other Operating System. No, it’s not lock-in to M$’s office suite or browser or multimedia applications. It’s her professional organization making life Hell for those not using Mac/Lose operating systems. There’s this thing called a “lock-box” in real estate. They’ve chosen a new system of lock-boxes that requires an access card to be updated/verified daily and that can only be done by a visit to a Mac/Lose PC… #@!$$! Talk about Internet of Things done badly, perhaps the worst possible way.

Yes, I tried getting a dongle card-reader they sold her to run under Wine but even the installer wouldn’t run. What a regression! Not only do the ex-slaves of M$ have to return to slavery they have to pay for it. You can be sure I won’t do any IT-support for her on this gadget. M$ may have improved its product somewhat over the years but folks still operate in fear of malware, updates and they have to pay, pay, pay… for stuff they’ve already bought. She should retire. Perhaps when I get my annuity bumped up to what it should be she’ll be able to do that. Until then another year or two of slavery. When that’s done, there will be a “for sale” on Kijiji or an incident with a sledge hammer or a re-installation with Debian GNU/Linux.

Meanwhile, our $40 Odroid-C2 is looking better all the time. It’s imminent that all the drivers will be mainstreamed into Linux and the few issues with Ubuntu, browsers that don’t load and random glitches will fade into history. There won’t be issues with M$’s cloud here if I have anything to do with it.

Bob, you really need to re-examine your priorities in life because this bullshit post just makes you seem like an entitled man-child.

    LOL..

“The bastards who want her to run Wintel have a version of their software for Android!”

See, I knew there was a possibility to use Android here. Gosh. Blackberry phones are so old. I know of no one using them anymore. *rolls-eyes*

Sure it wasn’t you that dropped the phone?

“No reason for TLW to leave her job just because YOU are a control freak”

I may not agree with Kurks often, but I tend to side with him on this statement.

Well, all things have their time. I know it’s unthinkable but even TLW will retire sooner or later. I think the time is right. She’s not convinced even though her “error-rate” has gone up a lot in the last few years. She’s been spending more time being a grandmother and a landscaper than a real estate saleswoman lately. She’s been complaining more of aches and pains, too. She never used to do that and always belaboured me when I did so… She’s getting older although she’s still pretty sharp. Just as I decided I could have more fun not teaching, she will eventually make that conclusion about real estate. I’d give her a year or two at most. Certainly buying a PC will not push her over the edge but it’s one of many little things that are piling up. She’s getting me to pay for the vehicle insurance and property taxes this year. Assuming my annuity grows as expected, she may not have to work after 2016. How much income do two little old retired people need to spend? Not working would cut her expenses greatly: real estate licensing, fees for seminars, listing fees, brokerage fees, membership fees, various gifts/contributions, fuel, insurance, business taxes… Replacing all of that with just the usual homeowners expenses would lighten the load on her shoulders. I know I would retire to a shack in the bush in an instant if I were in her position. There’s no reason at all that either of us have to work at gainful employment these days considering assets and liabilities. The way my investments are going, our assets could double in 2016. Why work at all? Then again, I’d leave this high-maintenance property for an acreage in the bush where I could plant trees all day long with no one to object. We could sell our current property and buy whole square miles of bush capable of providing us with all the food and shelter we require. I don’t see any reason to cling to a worse lifestyle just because we’ve been living that way for decades. Change is good if it lightens the load.

“Imagine she’s about to give a presentation to a potential buyer. Imagine M$ deciding to force an update at that moment and require a reboot… ”

Then don’t use Windows for presentation, but only for that card thingie!

No reason for TLW to leave her job just because YOU are a control freak who wants an MS-free environment

  5. Good news! TLW may not need to buy a new PC! She dropped her BlackBerry smartphone for the umpteenth time and the screen shattered into a million pieces. A thin plastic film is holding it together well enough that it still functions but sometimes you have to poke two or three times to connect. It’s only a matter of time before she buys a new smarter smartphone and it will be ANDROID/LINUX! The bastards who want her to run Wintel have a version of their software for Android! So, all is not lost. FLOSS wins out in the end, sort of…

Life is good even if it throws one curves. We hang on and enjoy the ride. TLW has been dropping expensive gadgets for decades. This is nothing new but even I had no hope that the timing would be so good. 😉

  6. kurkosdr wrote, “in the last 10 years, new versions of Windows have been released that can self-repair corrupt files and self-update”.

That’s a definition of malware. In fact people are suing M$ for forcing updates. Who’s really running your PC and in whose interest is it to have M$ running your PC? I know it’s not in TLW’s best interest to have M$ controlling her life. She hates that. She’s a control-freak. Imagine she’s about to give a presentation to a potential buyer. Imagine M$ deciding to force an update at that moment and require a reboot… That has happened to me and it was less than ten years ago, about 2010 I think. I was giving a presentation and was informed I had 15 minutes to live. I didn’t make it and that copy of M$’s software was paved with Debian GNU/Linux at the end of the school day. M$ has no place in any business that wants to do what it does. M$ is not anyone’s friend.

  7. dougman wrote, “Will this work with my phone?”

    Nope. TLW has a BlackBerry.

dougman also wrote, “How is that a problem?? Every realtor I ever known and still know to this day, visit’s their office 2-3 times day!”

TLW’s brokerage is on the far side of the city, about 20 miles away. There is no real need to visit it except if a sale is made. That does not happen 2-3 times a day. Where we live a real estate salesperson is a contractor, not an employee. The broker maintains a supervisory and regulatory role not day to day supervision. Some brokers have a hundred salespeople. Imagine them visiting the office 2-3 times a day. There are brokers who provide office space to salespeople but TLW’s does not. TLW has her own office and runs her own business. Having to traipse over to the broker once per day to be able to access lock-boxes is indeed an inconvenience.

dougman wrote, “How is that a problem? Realtors lend out combination codes all the damn time.”

Where we live, real estate salespeople have a legal duty to the law and to the owners of real property to act personally, not allowing access unsupervised to strangers. The behaviour of lending keys is illegal and unethical. TLW never did that. This new rule is purely a burden to her costing her time and money.

  8. dougman says:

“That’s the plan. Annoy the Hell out of us so we will buy a new licence.”

Who is annoying who? You still have not told us what model lock box this is, and frankly, all one needs to do is say “Will this work with my phone?” If not, then reply with “I do not have a computer at home, my phone is everything I use.”

“TLW did go to her broker’s office several times to update the card. That’s a burden in miles/visits/good will.”

A burden in doing one’s job? How is that a problem?? Every realtor I ever known and still know to this day, visit’s their office 2-3 times day!

“The problem this is intended to solve is not picked locks but realtors lending out their electronic keys.”

How is that a problem? Realtors lend out combination codes all the damn time. In fact, sometimes homes have been robbed by people pretending to be realtors, calling the agent through the MLS and stating that their clients just saw the house in question and want to see inside, right then and there.

Tossing all that aside, it’s not entirely hard fire off a qemu or vbox session with a pirated copy Windows XP or 7. But to take this a step further, as she works her own job and a living, she could easily just buy a new laptop for herself and ignore what you say. Problem solved.

  9. kurkosdr says:

    us het = is her

  10. kurkosdr says:

That’s true, but she can’t get me to keep it going for her. Hello malware, re-re-reboots and eventually failure to boot… I used to have to attend to her XP machine almost daily and she lost files.

It may not have occurred to you, but in the last 10 years, new versions of Windows have been released that can self-repair corrupt files and self-update. I believe your invaluable Windows knowledge (not) is actually not necessary for TLW to run her system. So, your attempts to scare her out of using Windows and as a result to push her to leave her job as soon as feasible will NOT work. The worst that could happen us het being forced to by a new McAfee when the trial expires and buying a new laptop.

So, in order to avoid unnecessary expenses, I suggest you help TLW into a clean install of Windows, even one used only for the purpose she wants it to.

She may well keep the subject PC for this use alone in which case it might survive but I doubt she has that kind of discipline.

Yeah, she might be tempted to bite the lotus of Netflix and Amazon Prime and be infected with the disease of convenience. Or even worse, try out a proprietary windows game and find out she actually likes it. What a big threat this is to you Pog, TLW living her (digital) life as a free person…

  11. dougman wrote, “I seriously doubt it has to be done everyday”.

Nope. That’s the plan. Annoy the Hell out of us so we will buy a new licence. TLW did go to her broker’s office several times to update the card. That’s a burden in miles/visits/good will. The problem this is intended to solve is not picked locks but realtors lending out their electronic keys. That doesn’t work if the key is changed daily. It’s a bit like M$ and secure booting. Some folks just love to be made indispensable and there are millions that fall for the scam.

  12. dougman says:

Tumbler lock boxes can be picked, I have shown realtors how it can be done easily in a few minutes.

“No, it’s not lock-in to M$’s office suite or browser or multimedia applications. It’s her professional organization making life Hell for those not using Mac/Lose operating systems.”

What model lockbox is this? Kinda odd you left this important information out.

Obviously, the card could be updated from the home office, and I seriously doubt it has to be done everyday. If so, the card would be expired until brought to the office and run through the program, then you can use it that day. Most expire withing a few days.

Is she showing homes everyday? Doubtful.

This sounds like a non-issue to be honest.

Regarding Office, it always has problems and always will nothing new. Just wait when Office is not downloadable anymore and you run it as an online app 24/7.

  13. kurkosdr wrote that TLW is “a free person with her own income and she can go into a local computer shop and buy a new Core i3 laptop running Windows with her own hard earned money so that she doesn’t have to cave in into you controlling and irrational demand for her to quit if you sledgehammer or pave with Debian the windows computer you will so gracefully provide to her. In that caae, you will not also have to deal with the MS EULA, but also with the EULA of whatever OEM crapware HP, Dell and the like throw in”

That’s true, but she can’t get me to keep it going for her. Hello malware, re-re-reboots and eventually failure to boot… I used to have to attend to her XP machine almost daily and she lost files. She may well keep the subject PC for this use alone in which case it might survive but I doubt she has that kind of discipline.

  14. kurkosdr says:

But I think Pog’s main problem is slavery to the evil Windows EULA, you know, that piece of unenforceable legalese everyone clicks “accept” on before going to the drawer containing the set of pirated essentials to shuffle through the goods that are going to be installed next (MS Office, Power DVD, PowerDirector, Pinnacle and Photoshop) which btw also contain EULAs which are pieces of unenforceable legalese (otherwise the drawer containing their discs wouldn’t be called “the drawer containing the set of pirated essentials”)

Anyway, because of the evil MS EULA, the TLW should be forced to leave her job as early as is financially viable and live a life of stay-at-home wife dependent on hubby’s income instead of being independent. And that’s probably from a husband who doesn’t allow the use of Netflix, Amazon Prime or even better Exodus for Kodi and torrents around their house (or is it HIS house?)

And that’s why you should have your hubby (or wife) sign a pre-nup btw.

  15. kurkosdr says:

Virtual Box is your friend, in this case.

No, VMware, with it’s excellent USB support is. Don’t know if you can easily secure a pirated version for Desktop Linux though…

VirtualBox looks like a real VM tool on the outside, but the free version doesn’t do USB support…

  16. Agent_Smith says:

Virtual Box is your friend, in this case.

  17. kurkosdr says:

or at least tell them to STFU if they = or at least tell them to STFU if you

  18. kurkosdr says:

Have you heard of virtual machines bro? Or, failing that, partitions and multiboot? That way, you can contain the evil OS there and use it only for the purpose it is irreplaceable.

As regards the “pay, pay, pay” argument, you realise that you are urging your wife to quit from thousands or possibly tens of thousands of dollars of income to not buy a single windows license? And that the job may be more fulfilling to TLW instead of being a stay-at-home wife if she doesn’t find another good job after quiting? (assuming you care about her at all) Do you really hate Windows so much, or the call for her to quit is some king of blogging hyperbole?

Also, you do realise that TLW, despite being disparagingly referred to as “The Little Woman” by you, is a free person with her own income and she can go into a local computer shop and buy a new Core i3 laptop running Windows with her own hard earned money so that she doesn’t have to cave in into you controlling and irrational demand for her to quit if you sledgehammer or pave with Debian the windows computer you will so gracefully provide to her. In that caae, you will not also have to deal with the MS EULA, but also with the EULA of whatever OEM crapware HP, Dell and the like throw in. So Pog, when it comes to providing TLW with a working Windows installation, choose wisely, for she has other options for her IT needs than you…

PS: This is btw why people should avoid wacko fixed to “ideologies” and “causes”… or at least tell them to STFU if they are married to them…
