Software Patent Thermogeddon

M$ and “friends” are unleashing the Nortel patents against Google several ways. A recent barrage in court seeks to undermine Google’s whole business. Expect it to annoy the world for a decade. On of “The patents describe "an advertisement machine which provides advertisements to a user searching for desired information within a data network."”

See Patent war goes nuclear: Microsoft, Apple-owned “Rockstar” sues Google.

Where’s GROKLAW when you need it? I hope Pamela comes out of retirement proclaiming the cause justifies the risks. Let’s hope the Obama-regime and USPTO and US Congress and the Supremes get their act together and chuck these attempts to patent common sense. I would bet Google is not going to allow M$ to tax their business out of existence.

    This is not just whimsy.

Certainly not. In addition to whimsy, it is complete fantasy.

A company like Google could decide that the business springing up in Asia and Africa is worth more than the USAian business and it could happen within a year or two. Servers can live anywhere on the Internet to be free. Google has invested a lot in USA and are being abused by USA patent-silliness and this NSA nonsense. It would make perfect business sense. One question would be whether they would ship their servers or just build new ones. Then have ~ 1 million so it could be a major calculation.

This is not just whimsy. I remember a few decades ago that Sierra Bullets lived in California and California taxed them to death and workers demanded high wages. They moved to a southern state and took only their chief bodies. Other businesses moved out of the USA forever like TV makers and such. The USAian economy is weak and could go either way, yet the government thinks it’s OK to fiddle while the country burns.

There are more and more countries that are now ignoring US laws, either dejure or defacto. As this nonsense keeps up there will be more and more.

Publicly state the reasons why they are doing this and I guarantee this crap will disappear.

In doing so, it would make the plaintiff’s namely Microsoft, Apple, RIM, Ericsson, and Sony look like a bunch of asses and would ruin their image consumer wise.

I once knew a coffee shop that attracted a butt-load of people, but other business’s got jealous and fought them in court of various reasons. They decided to just move and not even bother, and in the end due to stupidity and lack of foresight, the other businesses folded due to lack of customers. The coffee shop remained in business and was welcomed elsewhere.
