Ding! Ding! Ding! That Bell You Hear Is The Anchor Chain Of Wintel Dragging Down The PC-Industry

“Combined shipments of desktops, netbooks and notebooks showed a year-on-year decline of around 10% in the fourth quarter of 2012, as consumers favored Android and iOS pads over Wintel-based PCs. Microsoft and Intel will suffer further, with the Wintel PC market share expected to decline from 72% in 2012 to 65% in 2013.”

see Wintel PC market share set to fall to 65% in 2013 | Canalys.

Will the “PC” industry even continue to exist if it is kept as a conduit for M$’s junk software to an unwilling market? How many quarters of declining sales will OEMs and retailers need before they realize that the OS may just matter? Surely, they can see M$ affects the price and cutting ~$100 off the price of a ~$300 PC will keep PCs in the game? Imagine what will happen if another ~$100 is cut off by using an ARMed processor. In fact, people see tablets and smartphones as PCs and they are outselling x86 PCs by a wide margin. The answer for OEMs and retailers is not to cut back on x86 PCs but to put FREE Software on them and to put ARMed processors in PCs. It will save them a bundle and increase unit sales. Just ask Lenovo and Dell who see sales rising in the future in regions where they ship GNU/Linux.

I recommend Debian GNU/Linux if anyone is listening.

My Mission

My observations and opinions about IT are based on 40 years of use in science and technology and lately, in education. I like IT that is fast, cost-effective and reliable. I do not care whether my solution is the same as yours. I like to think for myself.

My first use of GNU/Linux in 2001 was so remarkably better than what I had been using, I feel it is important work to share GNU/Linux with the world. I have been blessed by working in schools where students and school systems have benefited by good, modular software easily installed in most systems.

I have shown GNU/Linux to thousands of students and hundreds of teachers over the years and will continue in some way doing that until I die in spite of the opposition.
