Servers

Well, oldman, one of our resident trolls, provoked me into finding some data on unit shipments of GNU/Linux servers. I cannot afford to buy one of IDC’s reports but I found these details from it on the web:

IDC – 2010 Servers (000) growth (%)
Units Shipped Installed Base
ThatOtherOS 5503.7 25675.5 21.44
Linux 3038.3 8102 37.50

Notice that the rate of growth of GNU/Linux is nearly double that of that other OS and at that rate, GNU/Linux could “catch up” in installed base by 2022 or so. It could be much sooner if the number of Wintel clients continues to stagnate and GNU/Linux becomes more popular on the desktop as Canonical predicts.

Don’t be a moron, people that disagree with you aren’t trolls.

Trolling requires deceiving; any trolling that doesn’t involve deceiving someone isn’t trolling at all; it’s just stupid.

Given your apparent anti-semitic support of the war profiteer IBM, you fit the definition of trolling.

Here is your chance to prove that you are not a troll, Bob. All you have to do is tell the world what you think about Hans Reiser.

I assume your invoking a (conservative) linear catch-up rate assumption. More likely its exponential in which case it will be well before 2022….

Don’t know the man but have heard about his file-system and conviction for murder. I have never used the file-system but I know some people who swear by it. I like jfs.

There’s my que! Don’t forget, that’s history. Microsoft and their followers are actively engaged in crimes against humanity right now. Yes they are, the digital enslavement of the population and the attempted removal of FLOSS as a competitor.

I guess you didn’t get the memo Ivan. That’s okay, you’ll get the message eventually. IBM’s transgressions were all carried out by Nazis or slaves working under Nazi overlords just like all the other atrocities. They were no different. But if you were to ask them, they would say they were “just following orders”.

Microsoft and their follower’s crime against humanity is not an atrocity but is enslavement non the less. Had they gotten their way 100% the World would be a very different place. As it is we still struggle to gain control of our software back from Microsoft.

When all choice is removed and only one vendor markets the goods, that is economic enslavement. That is what Microsoft is guilty of and the people who attempt to ruin the competition by all manner of false accusations and negativity are just as guilty as they are.

You didn’t get the word Ivan and I’m not going to be the one to enlighten you.

Hmmm… Last I heard websites like this one have global reach. Is there anything more? Moon? Mars?

I was just today looking at “linux desktop” as a trend in India. Around 2006 there was lots of activity there and it is spreading like wildfire. Not all the news is negative. A lot is about the positive benefits of GNU/Linux on the desktop.

My Mission

My observations and opinions about IT are based on 40 years of use in science and technology and lately, in education. I like IT that is fast, cost-effective and reliable. I do not care whether my solution is the same as yours. I like to think for myself.

My first use of GNU/Linux in 2001 was so remarkably better than what I had been using, I feel it is important work to share GNU/Linux with the world. I have been blessed by working in schools where students and school systems have benefited by good, modular software easily installed in most systems.

I have shown GNU/Linux to thousands of students and hundreds of teachers over the years and will continue in some way doing that until I die in spite of the opposition.
