No, I meant exactly what I said. Nice try at redirecting the subject away from Microsoft and its non compliance with the EU settlement though. But…..once again, Pog’s post was about Microsoft and its non compliance with the EU settlement. It was NOT about whether customers complained nor does it have anything to do with how you want to interpret the English language and its usage.

Microsoft broke the agreement with the EU. Here’s hoping they are hit with a HUGE fine.

You’re not excused. His post was clearly an attempt to redirect the subject from Pogs original which was regarding Microsoft being out of compliance with the EU settlement to one of his choosing which was whether any customers complained. Whether customers complained or not has no bearing on Microsoft breaking its agreement with regard to the EU settlement.

I personally have IE, Firefox, Chrome, and also Safari installed on my home workstation so that I can check some web stuff I do as a side line. There are supposed to be differences in rendering of web pages amongst them, but I have never run across any in the things that I do. Not sophisticated enough, I guess.

Firefox has some plug-ins available that I haven’t seen for the other browsers and one of them has been useful on occasion. Chrome strikes me as somewhat faster in terms of displaying a new page than the others, but I have not measured that in any way. Safari feels clumsy to me.

Bottom line, though, there is really nothing very different between them. They are all free in the important aspects and work essentially identically.

What’s to choose?

* The people who are going to install a different browser tend to do so by choice, and will install it regardless of whether MS has a screen offering them the choice. They don’t need a screen to tell them.

* The people who are not in this group are for the most part not going to try out another browser, but rather stick with what they know (IE) than jump into something untried and untested (by them).

* The rest, i.e., the ones which were not aware of the possibility of installing a different browser, but who are adventurous enough to think “hey, let’s try this” are statistically negligible – being ‘adventurous’ and/or tech-savvy and not knowing there are alternatives to IE seems quite contradictory to me.

I’m all for watchdogs, but whenever I read about the EU’s economic watchdog, they seem to set out to fight some complete non-issue, for great justice, mainly to show how ‘on the case’ they are and how closely ‘big money is being watched’. I think there are a lot better causes to fight for than the windmills they insist on attacking.

What also bothers me is that apparently, in these days of economic crisis, they promise a ‘deep-going and thorough investigation’ of an issue no-one except a handful of idiots actually cares about.

1. The topic is the disappearance of the browser choice option in W7 (be it accidental or intentional).
2. Clarence Moon’s comment states that no one seemed to care about browser choice.

The observation was quite correct anyway, as indeed hardly anyone outside of the circle of people who seem to believe that operating systems belong to the domain of politics seems to care now, or have cared at any point in time.

Really, Linuxadvocacyland seems to be getting a lot dumber and more illiterate of late! (explicitly excluding Herr Pogson himself, whom I find quite coherent, as long as he’s not writing on the topic of IT, and Oiaohm, who suddenly became a lot more intriguing after the Morse Code style English bit)
