“8″ through the eyes of a desktop user

“What is the experience like on Windows 8 when the end point isn’t touch enabled?

In a word: Bad.”

Face it. A user interface designed for tiny touch screens is not optimal for monitor, keyboard and mouse. Canonical should take note as well…

Vista, Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture, to be packaged for Debian

“The Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (Vista), an open source hospital information system used in 160 hospitals, several hundreds of clinics and more than a hundred nursing homes, will become part of the Debian free software distribution.”

Wow! Who thought Debian GNU/Linux was only for geeks? Vista is a huge part of the Debian Med (Medical Group). It is a package built to run the IT of medical facilities and includes

  • Clinical Functions,
  • Financial-Administrative Functions,
  • Infrastructure Functions, and
  • Patient Web Portal Functions.

There are lots of non-geeky packages in Debian GNU/Linux as well, like LTSP for schools, and packages for scientists, engineers and artists.

M$ Caught Cheating Again

It appears “7″ SP1 broke the browser choice thingy and M$ has been out of compliance with the EU Commission for over a year. M$ claims it was an accident. Do you want your IT run by an organization that takes legal committments and software updates so lightly?

I recommend Debian GNU/Linux, software that works for you, not M$’s salesmen.

see Microsoft 'didn't notice' it had removed Browser Choice for 17 months • The Register.

My Mission

My observations and opinions about IT are based on 40 years of use in science and technology and lately, in education. I like IT that is fast, cost-effective and reliable. I do not care whether my solution is the same as yours. I like to think for myself.

My first use of GNU/Linux in 2001 was so remarkably better than what I had been using, I feel it is important work to share GNU/Linux with the world. I have been blessed by working in schools where students and school systems have benefited by good, modular software easily installed in most systems.

I have shown GNU/Linux to thousands of students and hundreds of teachers over the years and will continue in some way doing that until I die in spite of the opposition.
