More Malware From Sony

Malware, short for malicious software, (sometimes referred to as pestware[1]) is a software designed to secretly access a computer system without the owner’s informed consent.”

That’s what Sony has put into their latest update of PlayStation 3. 3.56 is reported to contain a rootkit permitting running software on the Playstation without the owner’s consent. That’s Malware and Sony should smarten up. They are already in court over the removal of “Other OS” capability and have a judge on their side to clean up the Internet for blocking the return of “Other OS”.

I am not a business man but I certainly know a business is in trouble when they get sued by customers in large numbers. What’s with that? Do they have suicidal impulses? What have Sony got against customers using the product as intended?

Today: Android 3 – 1800 GMT

The preview video and the talk of 3D cameras and viewing could mean this is more than Android on a big screen. Combined with a web app store, this could be a game-changer. The superiority of IT using Linux, FLOSS, and Android will be obvious to the consumer and the consumer will see this on shelves and display cases. M$ cannot compete with Lose CE, Phoney7 or some vapourware. It could be two years or more before M$ can respond with product. If it starts suing over Linux, the world will know that Linux is superior. Chuckle.

UPDATE
That was an amazing demonstration. This thing is an operating system for a PC. It should be able to run on smartphones eventually as well. So, users can have the same OS on smartphone and tablet. How long before they have the same OS on all their PCs? The demo included a game ported from PlayStation to Android in a very short time. Expect more to follow.

Apple has a tough act to follow. M$ is trailing in the dust.

Check out the Android Market. It reminds me a lot of the Debian GNU/Linux repository. There’s something for everyone.

Revolt Happens Not Only In The Street

The recent rebellions on the streets of Arab countries is fascinating but as a techie I love to see M$’s “partners” rebel against being used as lapdogs. The latest incident is Yahoo standing up to defend itself from being a scapegoat for the Phoney7 data siphon. Yahoo mail works well with every other smartphone so Yahoo rightly points out that the problem is entirely with M$’s implementation of checking for mail.

M$’s partners will not let M$ get away with anything these days. The infrastructure that allows M$ to make many $billions in profits by the work of slaves is crumbling. The godfather of IT is weakening.

On a similar note, Apple, which boasts the most loyal fans, was not able to get the fans to recruit new fans in 2010. iPhone4, for all the hype, did not increase market share. Oops.

Oracle does not escape either. They have lost total control over several FLOSS projects this year: MySQL, LibreOffice, and now Hudson. I could argue that control of Java was weakened by Android and Apache as well.

It is not a good time for bullies and dictators in IT these days.

My Mission

My observations and opinions about IT are based on 40 years of use in science and technology and lately, in education. I like IT that is fast, cost-effective and reliable. I do not care whether my solution is the same as yours. I like to think for myself.

My first use of GNU/Linux in 2001 was so remarkably better than what I had been using, I feel it is important work to share GNU/Linux with the world. I have been blessed by working in schools where students and school systems have benefited by good, modular software easily installed in most systems.

I have shown GNU/Linux to thousands of students and hundreds of teachers over the years and will continue in some way doing that until I die in spite of the opposition.
